WEATHER warnings were in place across Surrey on Sunday - just hours before a further onslaught by Storm Gareth arrived on Tuesday.

So many trees fell, appeals were issued by Surrey Police that calls for removals of non-emergency road blockages shoule be adressed to the county council.

Bunch Lane in Haslemere was one of the roads impacted, when a huge beech tree on the verge crashed down at around 9.30am.

Fortunately no one was injured when it fell completely blocking the road. The tree crashed down onto the fence of the house opposite, missing the building by a couple of feet.

Haslemere based CCP Groundcare was called out on Monday morning to remove the beech tree.

Neighbouring resident John Larking said: “I heard the crack and thought – that sounds near.

“Someone else had a tree fall down in their garden at the same time, so it must have been an extra strong gust of wind.

“It was very lucky no one was hurt. I know one couple drove past minutes before it fell, and another lady was walking to church that way when it happened.

“I was one of the residents who tried to contact Surrey County Council but it was not possible to speak to anyone as it was a Sunday.

“I logged the incident and a team arrived on Monday to cut the tree up.

“It took them all day because it was such a giant undertaking. The tree was probably 200 years old.

“Fortunately Bunch Lane is not a hugely busy road and there are routes out at either end.

“It was quite a sight. All the families came down to see it being cut up.”

Train services running across the South Western Railway network suffered some disruption, due to the number of line blockages caused by the high winds.

A spokesman for South Western Railway said: “Due to fallen trees blocking a number of lines, train services running across the whole South Western Railway network will be cancelled, delayed or revised.”

In an update at 1.45pm, customers were told Network Rail had imposed a 50mph speed restriction across the network due to the conditions. Trees blocking the line had been removed and trains were running but services continued to be delayed.
