AS Hindhead Golf Club approaches its 99th year and the countdown to its centenary, the outgoing captains for 2002, John Oliver and Dee Lecoq, putted their year out on the 18th green.
They then handed over the captaincy reins for 2003 to the newly elected men's captain Stuart King and ladies' captain, Glenys Bennett.
Stuart and Glenys 'drove in' their captains' year from the first tee, watched and applauded by supporting members who then followed and played the 18-hole foursomes. Ironically, the outgoing captains were the winners of the competition with 38 points.
In his inaugural speech, Stuart King said: 'It's a great honour to be the captain of one of the most picturesque and challenging golf courses in the south of England. Course manager Steve Holmes and his team are to be truly commended on being able to install a fairway watering system and drainage in the valley holes during the autumn. Yet today the course is in excellent condition, despite the weather we have had.'
Glenys Bennett added: " I'm proud to be a member of Hindhead Golf Club and it is such a privilege to have been elected as ladies' captain."
The new captains announced that their chosen charity appeal for the year is the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre in Frensham. In particular, money raised will go to providing bursaries for children who otherwise would not have the opportunity to attend the centre.
