MOBILE speed cameras aimed at reducing casualties have been brought into use on the A31 Hogs Back in a bid to drive down the number of speeding motorists. As part of the newly formed Surrey Safety Camera Partnership's work, two mobile enforcement officers will be out in new visible vehicles on the lookout for speeding drivers. There will be four primary mobile locations - two in Spelthorne and the other two on the Hogs Back, between Seale and the A3. These four casualty hotspots have seen 182 casualties, including 34 people killed or seriously injured in the past three years. Mobile enforcement is aimed at reducing casualties and is used to tackle excessive speeding - but on longer stretches of road rather than areas where collisions are clustered in one specific spot. The mobile speed cameras can be deployed at different locations at different times within the same stretch. The sites selected were given government approval due to a continuing history of serious collisions and casualties. Duncan Knox, who leads the partnership, said: "The mobile routes that have been selected have had an alarmingly high number of casualties and action needs to be taken. "We want to be open with Surrey residents about our activities and for drivers to be aware that we are carrying out this enforcement and why. But I would emphasise that people should drive at appropriate speeds at all times - not just at camera locations," he added. The Safety Camera Partnership was given the go-ahead by government officials in April after a rigorous review of all its camera locations. In addition to 17 fixed-speed camera sites, the partnership will be striving to reduce the number of drivers jumping red lights through camera enforcement at 12 traffic light junctions across the county. Alongside the visible safety camera partnership enforcement, the police will continue to carry out speed enforcement at sites of local concern.
