A CHEF at The Hogshead pub in West Street suffered burns to his arm when a fire in the kitchen forced drinkers to evacuate the building.

Plumes of smoke poured from the venue, which has now has been closed for repairs, when the fire broke out just before 2-30 pm on Monday.

Six fire crews from Guildford, Haslemere and Rushmoor attended, the first arriving within four minutes of being called.

Officers wearing breathing apparatus used three pumps for more than an hour-and-a-half to extinguish the fire.

Crews returned to monitor the site into the evening and until the early hours of the next day.

They carried out further dampening down operations and cut away burnt material from the building

An ambulance and paramedic vehicle also attended, and the injured man was taken to hospital for treatment. His details are not being released.

A spokesman for The Hogshead praised the efforts of its duty manager in calmly evacuating staff and around 40 customers from the building.

She confirmed that damage to the building had been limited to the kitchen, which would require refurbishing.

She said that the management was due to meet today (Friday) to make an assessment concerning reopening.
