A MOVING commemorative ceremony held in London’s Guildhall to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2016 was attended by members of Haslemere Young People’s Exhibition Team (HYPE), who created one of the specially commissioned artworks on display.
HYPE was one of 12 groups chosen to create an artwork honouring Gad Beck marking the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau in late January for this year’s ‘Don’t Stand By’ commemorative event.
The artworks were on show in the Guildhall and invited Holocaust and genocide survivors, MPs and dignitaries viewed the exhibition after the ceremony. The artworks were also shown on city centre Big Screens across the UK and shared via an online film.
The museum’s education officer Kay Topping, who attended the ceremony with HYPE members Elsie Stump and Charlie Repp (pictured above)), said: “We were delighted to be have been chosen to be part of this nationwide commemoration and were honoured to be able to take members of the HYPE team to this event.
“It was a beautiful and moving ceremony.”
