THE Alton Men’s Shed community group this week unveiled their very own workshop building.

Work on the building began at the start of August, and now the fine men of Alton have a fully operational shed in the car park at All Saints Church Hall, on Queen’s Road, available for personal and community projects.

The total material cost was less than £8,000, with the majority of the labour provided by the handymen themselves.

Alton Men’s Shed chairman Ian Scott said the committee and men wished to publicly thank their many supporters.

“Firstly, the Church of the Resurrection for the land space they have granted us along with the use of the facilities of the parish hall when the shed is in operation,” he said. “County and district councillors for their councillor grants which exceeded 75 per cent of the funds needed. With private donations and the men contributing to ‘Buying a Plank’ we achieved our financial goal.”

The grand opening on Tuesday saw more than 50 guests, including guest of honour mouth and foot artist Tom Yendell.

“This community group offers men the opportunity to share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue,” Mr Scott explained.

“It will be a place of skill sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction and hopes to be of assistance to as many other groups and individuals in the town to improve our own lives as well as that of others.

“If you would be interested in visiting the Men’s Shed to see the type of activities we are involved in, we are open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and most Monday afternoons. All are welcome to visit, and consider joining us.”
