THE consultation process has begun over two planning applications to build 15 homes on the site of the Silver Birch Inn in Greatham.

A change of use application and plans to build the new homes have been registered with East Hampshire District Council, along with plans to retain the existing large family home Witham House which is also on site.

Under the plans one two-bedroom flat, four four-bedroom detached houses, eight three-bedroom homes and two 'special' detached four-bedroom homes will be built in place of the existing public house and hotel in Petersfield Road.

Architect Andrew Guy explained that the chartered accountants Denning Male Polisano have submitted the full application on behalf of Pitch Property.

He said: "The development will create 15 new two/three storey dwellings in addition to the retention of Witham House as a large family house.

"There has been consultation with the parish at each stage of the design process and the scheme has been initially welcomed for providing a mix which includes smaller affordable homes appropriate to the village.

"The proposed redevelopment of the site accords with the government's policy aims for the best utilisation of previously developed land for new housing and creation of sustainable communities.

"The architecture will reflect local traditions and building materials with additional inspiration from traditional 'oasthouse' forms to be found in the locality.

"The application also includes a comprehensive design statement document which discusses all aspects of the design and highlights the importance of respecting the existing village setting."

Greatham Parish Council is expected to discuss the plans at its next meeting on June 13.

Copies of the plans can be viewed at EHDC's offices in Penns Place, Petersfield where comments about the application should also be send quoting application number F30622/002.
