AN ‘honesty box’ left at the end of Bells Piece Leonard Cheshire Disability service’s driveway just off Hale Road near the Six Bells roundabout, was stolen yesterday.
The box was left outside the supported living centre to allow passers-by to make a donation in exchange for fresh vegetables, which are grown on site by service users.
It is estimated that there was about £10 in the box when it was taken.
Jennifer Daniels, Bells Piece’s volunteer co-ordinator said the honesty box is put out every year and has never been stolen before.
Many local residents expressed dismay at the news, and are calling for the money to be returned.
One Facebook user wrote: “I bought some veg the day before yesterday, and thought what a lovely idea it was, what is the matter with people? Stealing from such a worthwhile charity.”
Another added: “Every time I drive past I think how lucky we are to live in an area where people are trusted enough to use an honesty box. What a bloody shame.”
Despite the upsetting incident, staff are not going to let it deter them from selling vegetables at the bottom of the drive.
Jennifer told the Herald Bells Piece would continue to put out their honesty box because their vegetables are very popular with locals.
Bells Piece is a residential home that offers 24-hour support to adults with learning difficulties.
