A PARTICULARLY strong Haslemere team were much too good for Deando Ruxley, ending their unbeaten record with an emphatic seven-wicket victory at the Recreation Ground.

A traffic snarl-up around Guildford delayed the arrival of some of the visitors and skipper Jon Larbey obligingly put the opposition in.

Young bowlers Chris Sturt, Sam Williams and CJ Hooker have no fear of reputation and blasted the top order away.

Hooker, in a devastating seven-over spell, removed Phil Woolston, skipper Fanie Van der Merwe and Bahzad Mahmood for just 14 runs before the 18-year-old had to take an enforced break.

Williams, coming on first-change, bamboozled the stubborn Mahebub Suleman and bowled Ali Khan.

Paul Goodall and Jose Walters then rallied Deando, taking them from 47-5 to 115-5 before Hooker returned to castle both of them.

The visitors' final 161 all out seemed unlikely to seriously test Haslemere's deep batting order. In fact, only five batsmen were required.

Simon Eastment and Larbey rattled up 68 in no time and although third-change bowler Goodall broke the partnership, Eastment's dismissal only brought Kevin Gray to the crease.

Larbey was out for an authoritative 66, including 10 fours and two thundering sixes, and after Williams had gone for a duck, Peter Dudley came in to enjoy himself, hitting five fours as he and Gray knocked off the remaining 48 runs.

The returning Andy Hastilow was not even required.
