FIVE candidates go head to head tomorrow (Oct 11)to win two Hindhead seats on Haslemere Town Council.

Cast your votes from 7am to 10pm at the polling station in St Alban’s community hall, Tilford Road, Beacon Hill.

BROOKS Sasha (Green Party) says:“The town council by-election is a real chance to bring in change. For too long the Tories have been the dominant voice in the town hall but you deserve a council that represents you, has diversity of voice and opinion, that knows and loves the area and will truly represent the people and give them the voice they deserve.

“I’ve lived in Hindhead all my life. I have been involved in many community projects, including Haslemere Food Bank, Transition Haslemere, South West Surrey Compass, and the campaign to keep our common land at Wey Hill Fairground. If elected I will support the protection of our green spaces and common land.”

DAVIDSON Jerome (Lib Dem) says:“As a long-term resident, I am concerned that Hindhead and Beacon Hill often seem to be treated as poor relations by the council. Obviously, that wasn’t helped by the previous Conservative councillor Alex Ford, who didn’t attend a single meeting in the year following his election.

“Hindhead deserve better representation than that, which I am determined to offer. I would push for a better bus service for Hindhead – one that is co-ordinated with train times in the morning and a service that doesn’t end in the middle of the evening.”

HILL Marie (Tory)says: “My late father, Michael Dover, was an active Hindhead councillor until his recent death, working tirelessly supporting local businesses, helping the regeneration of buildings like Undershaw, and initiating the new Station parking deck.

“Hindhead faces many challenges – pressures on housing and services which councillors should address, while also focussing on people’s day to day needs. Having a good insight into my father’s contribution, if elected I will show I share his values.”

ISHERWOOD Peter (Tory) says:“I have lived in Hindhead for 31 years and I have represented Hindhead as a Waverley councillor for many years. I am a governor of both Beacon Hill Primary School and Royal Surrey County Hospital, and on the board of Waverley Hoppa and Haslewey Community Centre.I was also a founder member of the Beacon Hill Light Brigade, and worked with Michael Dover and the Heavy Brigade to restore Woodcock Green, the Memorial Garden and Grover’s Garden.

“It would be an honour to be elected and to represent all sections of the community.”

WHITBY Geoff (Lib Dem) says: “I have lived in Beacon Hill for more than 30 years and stood a number of times – serving as a town councillor once before. If elected, I would be constructive – I would work with the existing members for the benefit of Hindhead and Beacon Hill.

“However, I am confident that decision-making will be improved if new and different perspectives are added to a council which, until these vacancies, comprised 17 Conservatives and only one other. I would argue for the town council to push much harder for better road maintenance in Hindhead, treating Churt Road and Tilford Road as priorities.”
