POLICE are reminding residents in Waverley to close and lock their doors and windows to prevent opportunist thieves taking advantage of the warm weather. The recent hot weather has led to a number of burglaries where thieves have been given an open invitation to walk in and help themselves, according to police. "Bearing in mind that a thief can get through any gap larger than a human head, householders are reminded to always close and lock their windows and doors. "Back doors propped open to let in some air and unlocked patio doors also offer easy access for thieves hoping to break into your house," said Waverley crime reduction adviser John Robini. Burglars like "easy opportunities," he told The Herald. "They don't like locked windows because breaking glass attracts attention. They don't like security deadlocks on doors because they cannot open them even from the inside and they have to get out through an open window. Simple precautions do work," he said. Police also advise homeowners to fit adequate locks and to restrict access to the back of the house with locked gates. A simple padlock is often a sufficient deterrent. Homeowners are also urged to ensure they keep their sheds and garages locked so that burglars cannot use their tools to break into the house. Mr Robini also urged motorists to close and lock car doors, windows and sun-roofs, even if they are only leaving their car for a couple of minutes. He said: "It only takes a few seconds for a thief to reach in through an open window and grab a handbag or a mobile telephone left on the front seat. So even if you are only going to be leaving your car for a few minutes, take time to make sure it is secure and prevent yourself from becoming the next victim."
