Sir, – The traffic calming scheme on Tilford Green can only be described adequately as vandalism of what has always been regarded as one of England's most attractive and hitherto unspoiled village greens.
I have yet to speak to even one person who approves of what has been done; most are appalled by it.
So who are the people who have foisted this deplorable scheme upon us? No doubt they are the same persons who, despite massive local opposition, want to turn Downing Street, Farnham, into a single traffic lane with its lay-bys, bollards, and other associated paraphernalia.
They will of course argue that Tilford Green is about safety. One can predict,
however, with a sinking feeling of certainty, that there will now be accidents caused by a badly designed and misaligned mini roundabout, by projecting curbs and pavements and by the confusing and ghastly
traffic lights junction just south of the river by the bridge.
One Surrey county councillor took credit in his election
literature for his advocacy of this scheme. Has he talked to any local people or visited the result of his efforts?
This will all have cost the local taxpayers many many thousands of unnecessary pounds. Residents of Rushmoor and Churt be warned! Your turn will be next for this new form of political correctness of so-called "traffic calming".
