CAR lovers flocked to The Herald and Petersfield Post’s Festival of Transport on Sunday held in aid of Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham and Petersfield Community Hospital.
The 17th annual event started in Farnham’s Upper Hart car park, with the deputy mayor of Farnham, Mike Hodge, flagging off the veteran, vintage and classic vehicles for their mini-rally taking in Wrecclesham, Bordon, Liphook and finally roaring into Petersfield to wow the crowds at the town’s Spring Festival.
Almost 100 vehicles lined up the whole of Lavant Street and Chapel Street – ranging from cars which graced the roads in the early 1900s through to modern day vehicles boasting the latest technology.
Judges picked out their favourite models and the winning owners were presented with their prizes on the stage of the Spring Festival in Petersfield Square by Sir Ray Tindle, proprietor of Tindle Newspapers Limited and owner of The Herald and Petersfield Post. Cheques for £1,000 each were also paid to both Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care and Petersfield Community Hospital.
The Mayor of Petersfield, James Deane, praised Sir Ray and all who had helped to bring the Festival of Transport to the town.
He said: “I would like to dedicate my support to Sir Ray as without him this event wouldn’t be here. I would like to thank him for everything he has done.”
Wendy Craig, vice chairman of Tindle Newspapers, added: “The hospital and hospice are doing some wonderful work in our communities and they need your support for their work. Thank you to everyone for their help on the event.”
Event organiser Alan Wooler gave special thanks to all the volunteers and Herald staff who made the event such a success, Clive Spooner and the Farnham Weyside Rotary Club for their marshalling and their much-valued involvement in Farnham, and Mike Moore and David Holdford for keeping everyone informed and entertained in Farnham.
He added his sincere thanks also to Waverley Borough Council, Farnham Town Council, the Petersfield Post, Farnham Baptist Church, Woodlarks, St John Ambulance, Altis of Lindford, Loo for Dos, The Friends of Petersfield Hospital and Cobra Graphics, as well as organisers of the Petersfield Spring Festival Steve Jacobs, Ben Errey and their team.
