MORE than 600 cyclists enjoyed a challenging ride through some of the prettiest parts of the Sussex and Hampshire Weald on Sunday, May 19, as they took part in the 11th annual Little Lumpy cycling sportive.
Raising money for its elected charity partner, Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care, and the Haslemere Festival, the ride saw cyclists choose from 40, 60 or 100 mile routes, all of which took them from Haslemere to South Harting, where the two longer routes branched off over some testing hill climbs to Finchdean.
As well as the beautiful countryside and cycling camaraderie, the participants enjoyed home-baked cakes at the feeding stations along the course, courtesy of a dedicated group of volunteers and Haslemere bakers, whose efforts have become legendary at Little Lumpy events.
A free breakfast of tea, coffee and a bacon or veggie butty was also on offer, and after the ride cyclists could buy a hot meal at the bar.
“We are delighted to once again have been chosen as the charity partner for this year’s Little Lumpy cycling sportive,” said Charli Quay-Barnham, community fundraising manager at Phyllis Tuckwell.
“Last year this event raised £5,000 to help fund the supportive and end of life care which we offer to local patients and families who are living with an advanced or terminal illness, such as cancer.
“As the NHS/Government only covers 20 per cent of our costs, we have to raise over £20,000 a day to be able to offer all our services, so fundraising events such as this are hugely important to us.”
If you’d like to get on your bike to support Phyllis Tuckwell, how about signing up for the Farnborough Flyer cycling sportive on Saturday, September 28?
