Karl Prentice says the club won't be hurried into appointing a successor to George Borg.
"The phone lines have been busy with applicants and a manager should be in place by the end of February," said the chairman, adding that the position would be formally advertised.
Prentice, who was due to talk to caretaker manager Stuart Cash and the players this week, would not give any clues, but said it was incorrect that former managers Steve Wignall, currently unemployed, and Steve Wigley, the Southampton reserves' coach, were in the frame for the job.
Colin Lippiatt, who was fired as Geoff Chapple's assistant at Woking a fortnight ago, is known to have applied.
Other names being bandied around are Ian McDonald, the last manager of the old Aldershot FC and a former distinguished player, now a scout for Middlesborough, Basingstoke manager Ernie Howe, caretaker manager Stuart Cash, and Chapple himself.
Farnham man Chapple, a prodigiously successful non-League manager, also a former Shots player, is in his second term as Woking manager, but has often spoken of his ambition to manage Aldershot.
Howe, the former QPR Crystal Palace and Fulham defender, who lives in Aldershot, has impeccable coaching credentials and has done a good job at Basingstoke with limited resources.
Cash was a well-travelled professional with Chesterfield, Rotherham and Brentford and an FA Trophy winner with Wycombe. He is popular with players and fans, but lacks full managerial experience.
Cash has his first home match in charge on Saturday when Aldershot attempt to complete the double against Bedford.
Lee Holsgrove is back at the Rec after a month's loan with Hayes.
Aldershot announced this week that Holsgrove, Owen Coll and Jason Chewins have all been taken off the transfer list.
