A handyman from Oakhanger is on a mission to give something back after answering a pensioner’s plea for help.

Chris Day came to the rescue of an elderly resident in Blackmoor by clearing their “jungle of a garden” for free after previous calls for help went unanswered.

Now he wants to give other people a helping hand through his ‘Day to Day Gives Back’ scheme by donating up to one day’s labour, completely free of charge.

“This started when I saw a post from a lady asking for help with her garden because she was elderly and couldn’t do it on their own,” said Chris, the man behind Day to Day Maintenance Services (Home and Garden).

“A couple of people who said they would do it didn’t turn up and I contacted the person asking if anyone had done the work. I ended up doing it for free.

“But afterwards I thought, I want to do that again – I liked the idea of giving something back.

“It just felt good and I liked the idea of spreading a little kindness, so Day to Day Gives Back was started.”

Chris, who specialises in maintenance and gardening duties, has offered to help a local person in need once every three months. Residents who would like to nominate a person for a helping hand should send Chris a private message via his Facebook page – and there’s already been a few requests.

He said: “I’ll choose a local person, family or community project who could genuinely use a helping hand with their home or garden, and I’ll donate up to one day’s labour.

“If I can make a genuine difference to one person every few months, then that’s a day well spent.”
