THE Farnham and Bourne Music Club's 2000/2001 season begins on September 23 at Farnham Maltings with an all-Bach spectacular to mark the 250th anniversary of the great composer's death.

The Farnham-based virtuoso violinist Brian Lloyd-Wilson, directing the City of London Chamber Players, will present two popular Brandenburg Concertos, together with a Bach violin concerto and The Musical Offering.

The Farnham link continues in the second concert at the Frensham Heights School's new performing arts centre on October 15. Previous winners of the Farnham Competitive Music Festival, Tim Sidford, Victoria Davies, Rachel Colman and Flora McIntosh, will perform a varied programme of works by Liszt, Chopin and Mozart.

All are impressive young local musicians who intend to make music their career.

The season takes on an international flavour on October 28 when the Spanish String Quartet, Cuarteto Casals, visits Farnham Maltings to perform the annual Anderson Concert in memory of the much-loved Farnham couple, cello teacher Kathleen Anderson and her husband Brigadier Will Anderson.

Cuarteto Casals were first Ppizewinners in the London International String Quartet Competition in April and will perform quartets by Schubert, Beethoven and Shostakovich.

With Christmas 2000 rapidly approaching, Farnham Castle will be the venue for the next concert on December 2.

The programme, to be presented by Cambridge Voices, promises seasonal delights, including musical bonbons from Poulenc and Durufle, masterpieces from Praetorius, eloquence from Taverner and Bax and majesty from Bach and Scheidt – all presented with choregraphic wizardry!

The award-winning Farnham Youth Choir, under its musical director David Victor-Smith, will be joined by Chaconne Brass on February 10, 2001, for a joint concert at the Maltings.

Chaconne Brass has worked extensively with schools and has developed a style that appeals to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

Another prizewinning ensemble, The Newbold Piano Quartet, will perform at Farnham Maltings on March 23.

This young group was the first prizewinner in the 1999 South-East Music Schemes Competition and has also won numerous other competitions.

The quartet will perform works by Mozart, Dvorak and Andrew Keeling.

The season will close on April 28 when the young, virtuoso cellist Alice Neary, together with Gretel Dowdeswell on the piano, will perform at St Thomas-on-the Bourne Church.

Alice is a player of the highest calibre who has won rave reviews from the London critics.

Alice and Gretel have been chosen by South East Music Schemes to tour the region and will be performing works by Bach, Faure, Schumann and Rachmaninov. Contributed
