BORDON'S garrison padre, who brought back the garrison fete, bade farewell to the town on Sunday.

Rev Mike Roemmele took his last service at St George's Garrison Church where his congregation presented him with a silver-topped decanter and a framed portrait of the old garrison church.

Rev Roemmele arrived in Bordon in March 2000, filling the position left by long-serving Padre John Hooley.

Since his arrival, Rev Roemmele brought back the annual garrison fete in July 2000 and organised a second - even more successful - fete last year, which raised £2,400 for charity.

Although he is sad to be leaving the area, he is pleased with his new post in Northern Ireland - his home country.

Former churchwarden Andy Anderson told The Herald that he was sorry to see Rev Roemmele leave the area.

He said: "He will be very much missed. Since he came here he has done an enormous amount of work for the church, and for the community, and was very much involved in all of the families groups".

Although he was sad to see Rev Roemmele leave, he told The Herald that his replacement would be very much welcomed to Bordon at his first service on Sunday.

His replacement, Tyrone Hillary, who is moving to the area from Tidworth, will now be organising the third garrison fete on July 6.

As well as farewells at Sunday's service, there was also a welcome new arrival.

RAF wives Tane Beaumont and Wendy Radford presented the church with a large mural they had painted commemorating St George, to mark St George's Day on Tuesday.

Last week, the mural was shown to children at Bordon Junior School before it was officially presented to the church where it will be put on display.
