INFLATION-busting price rises of around six per cent will hit motorists who park in several of Farnham's town centre car parks. The plan to raise the charges across the borough comes in an effort to balance the books and to plug a shortfall of £130,000 in car park income this year. If the new charges are agreed by Waverley Borough Council at its meeting next Tuesday, they will come into effect on February 1. In the Lower Hart car park some charges are set to double if it is agreed to designate it as a prime site. Charges of a straight 60p per hour from Monday to Saturday are likely to apply, to encourage short stay car parking. The rise is estimated to generate an additional £95,000 in income. Present charges are 40p for three-quarters of an hour, 60p for up to two hours, 40p for a third hour and 50p for each subsequent hour. Councillors will hear in an officers' report tthat the car park has been hit by "severe management problems" because nearly all users opt to stay for two hours or longer. "As a result, the car park is full for most of the day, with queues forming and congestion soon arising. This is harmful to the economy of the town," according to the report. It is hoped that longer-stay motorists will instead use the Upper Hart car park, which will also see its pay and display prices rise. The introduction of an up to two hours charge of 70p and a new charge of 40p for up to three-quarters of an hour - both from Monday to Saturday - is likely to apply to help relieve pressure at Lower Hart. The report continues that the parking increases take into account the decreased use of the Dogflud car park since the closure of the health centre at Brightwells. If they get the green light next week, the changes are set to generate an additional £285,000 across the borough. Season tickets charges in Farnham are likely to remain unchanged.
