IN a step toward "breaking the mould" and becoming the most "innovative" authority in the country, East Hampshire District Council (EHDC) has given the green light to supply utilities to residents.
The district council could soon be spearheading a "pioneering venture" and could become the first authority in the country to supply energy and other utilities to new homes.
The council's cabinet gave its full support and welcomed plans to form an organisation, known as a Multi Utility Service Company – or MUSCo.
The MUSCo would oversee the potential supply of gas, heat, electricity, water and broadband to district residents. The go ahead comes following consultation with utility providers on the benefits and challenges associated with managing such a body.
EHDC officials said that such a scheme would result in "huge benefits" for East Hampshire as management of utilities enables any surplus income to be reinvested locally to deliver savings to residents, reduce future development costs, or generate income for the council.
