DEVELOPERS have won a planning appeal to build 28 flats on the site of a former nursing home in Shortheath Road.
The decision, by a government-appointed planning inspector, will infuriate campaigners against Wooburn Homes's plans, which were rejected by Waverley planning councillors in June.
Wooburn Homes appealed, and after a two-day public hearing, the planning inspector found in the developer's favour.
Reacting to the news, borough and county councillor for the area, David Munro said: "I am flabbergasted that the appeal was allowed over sustained opposition by the council and hundreds of local residents.
"I have contacted Waverley Borough Council, whose officers have always recommended refusal, to see if there is anything in the inspector's report that will give grounds for an application for judicial review of this perverse decision."
Residents, who formed the More House Action Group, believe the flats wll be out of character, be an over-development, infringe on their privacy and increase traffic congestion and the danger of accidents in the area.
Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounds a scaled-down 12-flat application for the site, submitted by Wooburn Homes in September.
