THE fate of Grayshott Nursing Home rests with a government planning inspector, who will decide if it can be demolished and replaced by ten homes.
Developer Premier Properties has appealed against East Hampshire District Council's refusal to allow the scheme, for ten two-bedroom flats with parking and altered access in Boundary Road, opposite the doctor's surgery.
The plans drew strong opposition from local people, concerned at the levels of traffic a new housing development could generate.
The reasons given for refusal were that the proposal would be an over-development of the site, and that car parking provision was inadequate.
Objectors turned out in force for the north area meeting to hear the decision but East Hampshire planners had recommended that the plan be accepted.
Case officer Nicky Powis had said that the new development would not necessarily generate more traffic than the home.
The home itself is still in operation, caring for a number of elderly and frail residents.
The appeal will be decided by way of written representations.
East Hampshire District councillor and Grayshott resident Ferris Cowper said that he was not surprised that the developers had appealed, but was nonetheless optimistic.
"I'm convinced that taking all these issues into account, the inspector will refuse the appeal," he said.
