VOLUNTEER co-ordinator and leader for Haslemere Walks for Health Martin Osborne has stepped down after over 10 years.
Walkers and walk leaders, along with some of Martin’s family and staff from Places for People Leisure presented him with a barometer and a weather station along with a picture of all the walkers at a special post walk social event at Haslemere Leisure Centre on Saturday.
The walkers also presented Martin’s wife Ann with a bouquet of flowers for her support during his long service to the group.
Martin was also given a certificate by Carol Searle, Waverley Leisure Centres’ health and wellbeing manager on behalf of the Walks for Health head office for his dedication to the scheme.
She said: “Martin has dedicated his time and energy for the last 10 years to building the walks from one per month to four per week.
“He arranges social events, an annual barbecue and meals out for the walkers. He also organises presentations for walkers when they have completed a certain number of walks.”
Martin gave a speech saying he would like to encourage GPs to refer more people and would love to see many more people attend the walks.
Two walk leaders, Susan Hitchin and Elizabeth Holland are stepping up to take over to share the role of volunteer leader.
Ms Searle added: “Lots of us wish we did more exercise.
“We know it’s good for us. And we know our health’s important.
“But it can be easy to find excuses for not actually getting out there and doing it.
“Walking works and it’s really easy to get started, you don’t need any special equipment – and best of all it counts towards your recommended amount of physical activity.
“Walking can improve your health, your happiness and, if you join one of our groups, it will give you the chance to explore the outdoors, get to know your local area and meet new people.”
The 40-60 minute walks start from Hasleway Community Centre at 2.30pm, on Tuesdays; from High Lane Community Centre at 1pm, on Thursdays, and from Haslemere Leisure Centre. at 11am, on Saturdays.
