GREATHAM man and Liphook parish councillor Don Jerrard has said that he "wouldn’t take a salary" if elected as Hampshire’s police and crime commissioner.

Mr Jerrard (pictured), who was formerly a member of Greatham Parish Council, said: “I am standing for the election on May 5 as an Independent and my deputy will be Tony Hook, a former UKIP Hampshire county councillor.”

Mr Hook is now the Independent county councillor for Andover South and lives in Yateley. Sounding confident of victory, Mr Jerrard said: “Like me he won’t take a salary when elected although the post pays £90,000.”

He said the savings from salaries would be “used to reopen police stations”.

“I want a police station in every major town and I will put more officers on the beat,” he said.

Radically, he said he wanted to get elected so that he could actually get rid of the Police and Crime Commissioner office which, he alleged, “is a waste of money and a lot of it is PR anyway.”

Simon Hayes is the current plice and crime commissioner.
