POLICE are warning shoppers to be particularly vigilant after a space of thefts from unattended trolleys in supermarkets.
In the Water Lane branch of Sainsbury's last Wednesday afternoon, a suede rucksack containing jewellery valued in excess of £2,000 was taken from an unattended trolley.
The rucksack is valued at £70 and inside was a sapphire and diamond gold ring worth £400, emerald diamond earrings worth £200, a large oval ring worth £700, a silver chain valued at £60. an antique "Arab" bracelet worth £800, a pair of cufflinks worth £100 and a pair of prescription sunglasses valued at £300.
On the same day, in the South Street branch of Sainsbury's, a handbag was removed from an unattended trolley
The leather bag was worth £50, and contained a Nokia mobile phone valued at £160 and £28 in cash.
The offender made off on a yellow push bike in the direction of Union Street.
In the South Street branch, last Tuesday, a black, nylon shopping bag was removed from a trolley.
The bag contained two packets of aspirin, a bottle of Night Nurse and £75 in cash.
