With his professional days long behind him, John Virgo suffered defeat to three local snooker players at Lindford WMC last Friday.

Virgo was the latest big name to feature on the bill at the Farnham & District League's presentations night and delighted a capacity crowd of 200 – already on a high after England's World Cup win against Argentina – with his trick shots and impersonations.

But the host of BBC's 'Big Break' show showed only glimpses of his old mastery at the snooker table.

First up was Terry Bradley, winner of the league singles and President's Trophy, and the Shottermill player ran out a comfortable 71-33 winner.

Andy Wells (Passfield) shot the highest division three break last season, but hardly got a look-in as Virgo rolled back the years with a break of 79. Wells conceded at 79-4.

Grayshott's Andy Best (Div II highest break) defeated Virgo on the last black and Bordon's Stuart Haig (Div I top break) defeated the old pro 64-30.

Ken Larby, who won the raffle prize of a 'wild card' entry, lost gallantly, 26-83.

Long-serving committee man Jim Best received a service to league award.

League officers Clive and Anne-Marie Jones were presented with a cut-glass vase to mark their retirements. Event organiser Anne-Marie has served five years as secretary, while Clive was nine years on the committee, acting as fixture secretary and treasurer.
