Farnham All Hallows Catholic School pupil Matthew Grant brought home the gold this Easter, in the prestigious under-18s Sportif International Judo Championships in London.

Despite the international cadet tournament, held from March 31 to April 1 at University of East London, hosting a staggering 550 athletes from 17 nations, Matthew, 14, won all of his fights at Ippon level, the highest score in the sport, awarded for a throw that places the opponent on their back.

He edged out fellow Brits MacKenzie Dove and Connor Murray to scoop gold in the U42 category, helping secure top spot on the tournament medal table for Great Britain; with eight golds, 10 silvers and 12 bronze medals.

Matthew’s interest for Judo began at Walsh CoE Junior School in Ash, when his teacher recommended he join Judo Club Osaka in Aldershot at the age of seven.

Ever since, he has been competing professionally, and is now also a member of the Hampshire squad, as well as the South of England team.

Matthew has recently won gold in all the competitions he has competed in and his dream is to be an gold-winning Olympian.

He trains four times a week and also coaches eight to 10 year olds on a separate evening.
