EIGHTEEN-year-old Kathryn Aitken, who attends the Ridgeway Community School’s Further Education Unit at Farnham Sixth Form College, has had a great time learning the ropes at Squire’s Garden Centre.

Kathryn, who has down’s syndrome and learning difficulties, has an interest in waitressing and would like to pursue a career in the area of hospitality, therefore she put her culinary skills to the test and joined the centre’s cafe team, assisting in the dining area clearing tables and keeping the cafe clean and tidy.

The Ridgeway Community School works with EmployAbility, Surrey Choices Ltd to support Kathryn and other students to complete work experiences once a week throughout the year.

EmployAbility staff meet with each pupil to find a placement that is linked to work skills they want to develop. Each student is then supported for half a day a week for a term.

She works with other Squire’s staff and is a valued member of the team. Paul Mason the manager is very pleased with all Kathryn’s hard work.

Erika Lindsey-Clark, Ridgeway further education teacher, said: “Squire’s cafe staff have made her very welcome and part of their team.

Kathryn loves her work experience there and is really proud that she wears a uniform.

“As a school we feel the experiences that are pupils gain from a work experience placement are invaluable.

“It helps the pupils to feel part of the community, be able to contribute to the world of work and develop communication skills. This has an impact on improved confidence and general well-being.”
