THE owner of the kebab van in Bordon High Street used a mop to beat off a masked man who tried to rob him. Detectives are appealing for information after the would-be robber fled the scene of the attempted theft shortly after midnight on Wednesday, December 27. They confirmed the 40-year-old victim, whom they refused to name, was unhar-med, but the robber might have sustained an injury during the incident. At around 12-20 am a man wearing a balaclava, and carrying what appeared to be a gun, approached the kebab van in the Guadaloupe car park off the High Street. He demanded money from the proprietor, who was working in the kebab van at the time. The victim refused and hit his attacker on the head with a mop in an attempt to scare him off. The offender ran away empty handed. The man police want to speak to is described as white, around 5ft 6ins tall with an athletic appearance. He was wearing a light red balaclava, a grey jumper and blue jeans. Dc John McCaig said: "I am appealing for anyone with any information about this incident to come forward. "The kebab van is used by a lot of residents in the Bordon area and the proprietor is very well known. It is possible that someone saw the offender in the area before the incident took place or saw him running away from the High Street. Fortunately, the victim did not sustain any injuries. However, the offender may have been injured as a result of this incident and I would urge him to come forward. "Please be reassured that incidents like this are very rare in the Bordon area and officers are working extremely hard to locate the offender and ensure he is dealt with appropriately." Anyone with any information should contact Dc McCaig at Alton CID on 0845 0454545 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
