THE Under 18 futsal team from King Edward’s School, Witley, reigned supreme after being crowned regional and national champions following a tense competition in London.
King Edward’s held off challenges from the Royal Russell School and Winchester College.
The deciding match against Winchester College was a close call with King Edward’s narrowly coming out on top by a 5-4 margin.
King Edward’s success followed victory in the school’s own regional futsal tournament the previous week, when the team once again secured a win over Winchester College in the final on penalties.
With the under 18 team putting in such a strong performance, coach Lewis Edney is equally enthusiastic about the U16 squad, who have reached the English School’s Football Association Cup Final, due to be held during the summer term.
Mr Edney said: “I am delighted with the hard work and sheer commitment that our players have shown. Their dedication has certainly paid off and represents a real morale boost to our U16 boys who will be keen to replicate this success when they compete at the English School’s Football Association Cup Final later this year.”
Futsal was introduced into the school four years ago to complement the existing football programme. Futsal is the global format for indoor small-sided football.
