AN angry Haslemere resident of more than 30 years has spoken out over the parking and other problems in Kings Road, after her granddaughter was involved in an accident while trying to cross the congested road.
June Hathaway, from Sun Brow, Sicklemill, has collected a petition containing names of more than 75 neighbours demanding that "something is done before someone is killed".
In a letter to Haslemere Town Council and Surrey County Council, Mrs Hathaway says that cars parked along the road make it extremely difficult for both drivers and pedestrians, adding that over hanging trees only make the problem worse.
Mrs Hathaway's frustrations came to a head after an accident involving her granddaughter Emma (11), a pupil at Woolmer Hill.
She said: "Emma was attempting to cross Kings Road to go over the footbridge to meet her mother at the library. Having checked the road was clear each way, she had started to cross the road when a car appeared suddenly from the station end of Kings Road, having been hidden from sight by the parked cars."
Although she managed to step back on to the pavement she was caught on her right elbow by the car.
The driver, who was an off-duty police officer stopped to see if she was all right, but Mrs Hathaway believes that a parent with a pushchair would not have been able to pull back in time.
"There are also lot of elderly people on that estate," she said. "If one of them had stepped out, they wouldn't have stood a chance. It's only a matter of time before someone is killed."
Mrs Hathaway says that her granddaughter's accident was one of many incidents and that commuters use the road as a rat-run. "The commuters shouldn't be there - if they can afford those kind of cars then they can afford to drive elsewhere," she added.
Mrs Hathaway believes cars should not be allowed to park anywhere along the stretch of road and there should be double yellow lines around the corner, together with a sign showing that children and the elderly use the road as a crossing.
She claims that attempts to get her voice heard about the dangerous conditions in Kings Road have fallen on deaf ears.
Haslemere Surrey county councillor Christine Stevens said she "wholly supported the residents of Sicklemill.
"Now that the darker evenings are upon us, we need to ensure that the road is well lit and foliage cut back to give good visibility."
Mrs Hathaway's petition likely to be presented at the next meeting of the Waverley partnership transportation committee in December.
