TRAFFIC calming along Kings Road in Haslemere is to be installed, much to the relief of local residents.
The decision was reached at Surrey County Council's Local Committee in Waverley, following the result of a lengthy consultation with residents.
Grant allocations of £35,000 and £15,000 have been made available to fund speed cushions along the road to slow the speeding traffic which often uses it as rat-run to avoid the congestion in Wey Hill.
The move follows a number of appeals made by the Kings Road Residents' Association, an action group set up to fight for much-needed measures to combat speeding problems.
The road is near Haslemere railway station and is constantly clogged by commuters' cars. It has been branded one of the worst in the town.
A further problem is the number of cars parked on the bend opposite the footbridge over the railway, which restrict visibility.
Last year, temporary calming chicanes installed towards the junction of Lower Street failed to ease the problem of speeding traffic and parked cars on the bend.
As part of the consultation, residents were asked to consider the possibility of closing the road nearing the sharp bend in a bid to reduce speed, and to limit the number of heavy goods vehicles driving through the residential section.
But the majority of those who responded to the survey felt that closing the road could cause more problems such as encouraging more commuter parking, and delaying the response time for ambulances.
It was further argued that the closure would put an end to the school-bus route.
The committee resolved to request a detailed design of the construction of the traffic-calming scheme from the local transportation director.
