AN appeal for votes has been made by parish councillors in an attempt to win cash for an annual floral competition in Hook.

In a scheme run by supermarket giant Tesco, Bags of Help are available for worthy causes and parish councillors hope the team at Hook in Bloom may cultivate a cash windfall.

But they are reliant on public votes.

The green-fingered folk are up against Hook United Youth Football Club and Odiham Trails, as they look to secure the top level of funding for the green space project.

Hook in Bloom has three main areas of activity – planting schemes to brighten up the centre of the village, a residents’ and businesses’ in Bloom competition with five entry categories, and a village show, which will encompass a traditional flower and produce show on September 11.

The parish council by no means think this will be a quick fix either, and they see 2016 as "just the start".

Some basic structural and colourful planting will appear in the village centre and selected areas around Hook will form the basis of the project with the capacity to be built on and developed in the future.

The council also notes that whichever of the £8,000, £10,000 and £12,000 funding boost they get, this will not be the last of their fundraising and they will continue to apply for grants and hold fundraising events.

South East Water work planned on Station Road, the availability and timing of plants and the continued work with Hart District Council are also other reasons highlighted as to why they accept this is an ongoing project.

Voting, using a green token at Tesco in Hook, closes on Sunday, March 6.
