A MOTORIST has been spared a potentially grisly death after driving onto a railway line north of Petersfield.

A councillor has revealed that a vehicle got stuck on the line in Sheet after taking a wrong turn at a level crossing.

The incident took place on a Sunday evening at the School Lane crossing two years ago but wasn't publicised by authorities.

A major disaster was averted as the motorist realised her mistake and called the emergency services, who managed to shut down the system.

The news coincides with an ongoing investigation by Network Rail into the possible closure of level crossings throughout the district.
