SOUTH West Surrey Liberal Democrats will choose their candidate to fight the next general election on May 17.

Members will vote from a shortlist of three, including Simon Cordon, who came within 861 votes of taking sitting Tory MP Virginia Bottomley's seat in last year's general election.

Mrs Bottomley has announced she will not be standing next time round.

The other two candidates are Serena Tierney, who ran the Lib Dems' campaign in Teignbridge last year which saw Richard Younger-Ross take the Tory marginal seat, and David Walter, director of communications at Lib Dem headquarters and Charles Kennedy's chief speech writer with "strong local connections".

The selection process, which began in early March with an advertisement for applicants, will culminate with a hustings meeting in Elstead on May 17 with the selection of the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate.

South West Surrey Lib Dem chairman Derek Seale said: "Liberal Democrats believe in democracy. That is why we never simply re-adopt our candidate after a general election.

"As befits a highly marginal seat, on this occasion we are offering members a choice between three very accomplished campaigners any one of whom would make an excellent MP for this area."
