MEMBERS of the Farnham Liberal Club, on South Street raised more than £500 for Macmillan Cancer Support, including one member who took to the razor after more than 20 years with a beard.

Alongside the beard shaving, members hosted a coffee morning and proceeds from the clubs Rockabilly evening, raised a combined total of £534.

Gary Taylor who raised £400 alone in sponsorship, had his beard shaved off by Carl Atkinson from Grant and Co Hair and Beauty salon in Downing Street. He said: “I have been growing my beard for more than 20 years, I have always kept it trimmed but never shaved it off completely. It is a bit cold now. I’ll grow it back at some point but I’ll keep it off for a while.

“I did it because its for a good cause and the money goes to a good cause. It was my decision and others, people were saying “it’s about time to get rid of it” but in the end it was my decision.”

Sylvie Kneller bakes the cakes every year for the coffee morning, she said: “All these charities do such a good job. We raise for Macmillan every year, and I’ve been helping out for the past eight years. People were very generous which was great. And we raised more than last year. You never know when you are going to need these people. My dad died of cancer and my uncles also – you think of them when your doing it, so it is all worthwhile. I’ve always been like this, I like to help people.”
