PLANS for AltonÕs new £1.1million library are progressing towards an expected opening in early 2004.

According to a spokesperson for Hampshire County Council, the design plans are now in their final stages.

They will double the size of the library area for the public which, in addition to the traditional core library service, will provide many services in line with the modern Discovery Centre approach.

The promotion of local history will be a key feature with displays from AltonÕs Curtis Museum and Allen Gallery, including pictures and artefacts, together with a coffee area which will enable visitors to enjoy the facilities at their leisure.

The new site will also provide an area to be used as an adult learning centre in the evenings. Improved access to IT will also be a key feature, with the provision of computer terminals for public use and greater availability of multi-media, such as DVDs.

Once the designs are finalised, expected later this year, the building contract will go out to tender. It is estimated that construction will take over 12 months, with the new library opening in early 2004. The existing library will remain open until this time.

The land occupied by the current library will be sold to housing developers, with the capital raised being used to fund the construction of the new facility.
