AN empty warehouse near Petersfield railway station is set to become a discount supermarket and wine merchant.

But a watchdog feels the arrival of Lidl and Majestic into the empty Focus building could have "serious consequences" for town centre trade.

Furthermore, they have accused the South Downs National Park Authority of setting a dangerous precedent by leading the way for a larger supermarket next door.

The national park authority gave the thumbs up to the controversial plans in Midhurst last Thursday.
