AS part of their Christmas activities to help those in need, the Lions Club of Farnham braved the elements on two Saturdays in December as they filled their buckets with donations from shoppers at two Farnham supermarkets.

At Sainsbury's Waterlane and Waitrose, thanks to the kind permission of the management of those stores, the volunteer Lions were outside shaking their buckets and thanks to the generosity of the shoppers collected more than £1,650.

The purpose of the activity was, with assistance from the parents and teachers and friends of William Cobbett Junior School Special Needs Unit, to raise funds to help convert a classroom into a soft play area and multisensory suite for the 20 children of the Special Needs Unit with severe and complex learning difficulties.

The soft play room will provide a safe area for children with co-ordination problems and the very nature of the wall and floor protection allows them to play with minimum risk. The multisensory room using, colour, sound and feel effects, provides a tranquil setting essential for children who are tense and stressed. The calming influences of these effects really help children and carers alike.
