A motorcyclist from Liphook has been jailed for 16 months after causing the death of another biker in north Wales in 2021.

Jonathon Godfree, 62, of Canada Way, Liphook, was sentenced at Caernarfon Crown Court on Monday having admitted causing death by dangerous driving after a fatal crash on the A5 near Betws-y-Coed on September 7, 2021.

The court heard Godfrey was riding a Honda Africa twin motorcycle as part of a tour group, when he pulled out to overtake a Mazda and BMW.

As he did so, he hit Jason Bown, 52, from Derbyshire, riding in the opposite direction on a Harley Davidson.

Mr Bown suffered significant injuries, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Godfree suffered significant but not life-threatening injuries.

The court heard the Liphook man was left “devastated” by Mr Bown’s death, and plans to never ride a motorcycle again.

Sentencing, Judge Niclas Parry ordered Godfree to serve half of his 16-month prison sentence, before being released on licence for 12 months.

He was also disqualified from driving for two years and eight months.
