It's Good Friday, so it must be Elstead. The increasingly popular Surrey Cycle Racing League three-day stage race always opens at Elstead and this year most of the country's top riders descended upon the Surrey village.

A 'short' race of 55 miles for the lower categories took place in the morning and the 85-mile race for elite riders was run in the afternoon.

This is probably Elstead's biggest sporting event of the year and with 160 riders taking part and various team support, there was a lot of colour added to the countryside between Elstead and The Sands.

The route follows Fulbrook Lane to Cut Mill Pond, then into The Sands to turn left back to Fulbrook Lane – just over seven miles and they only had to do 12 circuits!

After two laps, the field was getting stretched out and a few hopefuls were finding that their weekend's racing was coming to an abrupt end as the speed increased.

At the 55-mile point, the average race speed was 27 mph, and increasing.

Gethin Butler opened up a good lead, but Oakhanger's top cyclist, Chris Birch, breached a 31-second gap to join him at the front and on the finish line took third place.

Liphook Cycle Racing Team's prolific winner, Paul Pickup, was a comfortable fifth.

The following day, the action switched to Staplefield and Birch again rode well, going with all the breaks to take second place and the leader's jersey.

However, Birch was unable to control the race at Goodwood on Sunday. It did him no good when a VC St Raphael team-mate got into a break and helped drive it away from him.

But racing around Goodwood is where the Liphook Cycle Racing Team come into their own. Pickup was fourth overnight and with Justin Hoy and Pete Kench riding hard for him, he was able to take the overall lead on the final day, giving Liphook their biggest victory this year.

The Liphook-based Northover's Vets Team were in action in three time trials over the weekend.

On Good Friday, they rode a 10-mile event just outside Poole. James Millard of Charlotteville took the honours in 21mins 33secs. Pete Pickers (22-10) was again the fastest Northover rider with Alan Dawson (22-47) close behind, followed by Petersfield veteran Jack Brown (23-29), Tom Wollard (24-10) and Sue Dawson (28-55).

The Brighton Mitre 10-mile TT was held at Kirdford on Saturday. The circuit took in Wisborough Green and Fox Hill and was certainly not one of the quickest.

Graham Stazaker won the event in 23-20. The fastest Northover rider was Alan Dawson in 25-48. Pete Pickers did not like the hills, but was close behind in 25-59.

Rother Valley's Geoff Whitby was tackling his first open event and the Hindhead rider, though finding it tough, recorded 32-17. Club treasurer Simon Berry, having his first ride of the year, was content with 29-52.
