A JEALOUS, jilted lover who strangled his ex- girlfriend into unconsciousness, leaving her for dead, has had his "unduly lenient" sentence replaced by a potentially life-long jail term. Andrew Jones, 32, of Dennis Way, Liss, was jailed for six years at Winchester Crown Court in June, after being convicted of attempted murder. He received a further six months for affray. But last Friday, London's Criminal Appeal Court agreed with submissions made on behalf of the Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith QC, that the term was "unduly lenient". Sir Igor Judge, sitting with Mr Justice Goldring and Mr Justice Owen, instead imposed an indeterminate sentence of imprisonment for public protection (IPP). He said there was no basis on which the sentencing judge could have decided it was unreasonable to conclude Jones posed "a significant risk to the public of serious harm". An IPP is similar to a life term and an offender can only be released when authorities consider it safe to do so. "This was a case of attempted murder against a background of an abusive relationship in which the victim had already suffered from violence and abuse, and while the offender was on bail for a frightening attempt to intimidate the victim through the use of a weapon," Sir Igor said. "The motive for the offence was jealousy. "The offender intended, and was convicted on the basis that, he made a determined attempt to kill his victim, continuing to throttle her while changing his grip on a number of occasions. "He left her at the scene, believing that she was dead. "As a result, the victim suffered, and will continue to suffer, serious psychological problems. At the same time, the offender, with his emotional instability, shows no insight into his offending." The attempted murder occurred in August 2005, after Jones had seen the victim with her new boyfriend. He told her if he could not have her, then no-one would. After the attack, Jones went into a nearby field and took an overdose of painkillers. Jones has been before the courts on 17 occasions since 1992, has 27 previous convictions, mainly for relatively minor offences, and has served two jail terms for assault.
