In the space of just a few hours, a huge collection of litter was bagged up. The collection was so effective that almost all main roads were picked clean by noon on Saturday, and it was decided to cancel the second day.
The activity has become an annual event and is part of a national effort organised as part of the Great British Spring Clean.
Anyone who took part was able to use litter picking equipment supplied by EHDC’s street cleansing contractor.
The district council promoted the initiative after last year’s successful Clean for the Queen campaign.
Litter remains a huge problem across the country, causing harm to the environment and wildlife, with councils in England having to spend more than £700m on street cleaning services every year.
