A PEDESTRIAN crossing is needed on Forest Road, Bordon, Whitehill town councillors have claimed, suggesting that it has the highest accident rate of any unclassified road in the area.

Traffic using the road has increased with the building of the Lidl discount store on Pinehill Road and the council's planning and amenities committee agreed to push for a pedestrian crossing.

Chairman of the committee Basil Smith said: "There is a crossing needed on Forest Road, particularly for the elderly and handicapped."

Mr Smith said he was proposing for the town clerk to set the wheels in motion and write asking Hampshire County Council to begin a traffic count.

Deputy town mayor Faith Thomas agreed. She said a crossing was more urgently needed because a third doctors' surgery was due to open in the grounds of Chase Hospital.

Speaking after the meeting, Neil Ockenden said people "risked life and limb" crossing Forest Road to get to the sheltered accommodation at Shaftesbury Court.

He said: "It would be a very good idea for a traffic survey to be carried out there to find out where a pelican crossing should be situated."

He said he would like to see either a pedestrian controlled crossing installed or a zebra crossing. He was "extremely optimistic" that something could be done to improve the situation for pedestrians.
