A PLEDGE by London mayor Boris Johnson to try to halt plans to use West Sussex as a dumping ground for nearly two million tonnes of the capital's rubbish has been welcomed by the county council.

The South East Plan drawn up by the South East England Regional Assembly proposes West Sussex takes 1.23 million tonnes of London rubbish between now and 2015, also nearly 700,000 tonnes between 2016 and 2025.
