A new deal to secure “the long-standing heritage of golf” in Farnham has been agreed.
Waverley Borough Council has approved a new contract with SQ Leasing for the Farnham Park Golf Club and Cafe in Folly Hill.
Details still remain private but the new tie-up is expected to bring in more than £200,000 over the course of its 15-year tenure.
Councillor Mark Merryweather, portfolio holder for finance, assets and property, hailed the deal when the WBC executive committee met on Tuesday, August 5.
He said: “The new lease will secure a stable income stream for the council.
“It will ensure that the golf course and club are maintained without further cost to the council over the 15 year term.
The councillor added: “It also underpins the service level agreement that we have with SQ Leasing ensuring that the golf club, the cafe, and the public toilet facilities continue to operate.
“The tenant is already in occupation and had demonstrated strong performance in managing the golf course and cafe – and is committed to supporting Farnham Park’s environmental priorities.”
Councillors heard at the meeting that the club will also help with tree management and work within the council’s pesticide rules.
Cllr Merryweather added: “The golf club is an important community facility, welcoming players of all ages and abilities at accessible rates.
“It promotes health, wellbeing, and recreation and is part, of course, of the wider Farnham Park.
“The lease will help to preserve the long-standing heritage of golf on that site, support employment, and avoid the risks and cost of vacancy.”
SQ Leasing emerged as the preferred tenant following an open marketing campaign.
The golf course is a part of Farnham Park, a 130 hectare medieval deer park with many veteran trees managed by the council for wildlife and recreation.
