THE Earl of Selborne John Roundell Palmer, pictured, has been honoured for his services to science, by being appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE).

The citation in the New Year's Honours list for Lord Selborne, who is chairman of the Foundation for Science and Technology, reads: "He stands out as a leader of the scientific community".

He has carried out research into climate change, agriculture, education and conservation.
