A LORRY smashed its way through traffic lights and destroyed two pumps at a petrol station after an accident with a van on the A32 at West Meon.

Staff at the Meon Hut Service Station said the collision would have caused a major explosion if the garage had been open at the time.

The damage caused to the forecourt, road signs and traffic lights will cost thousands of pounds to repair.

Police were called to the Total garage at the crossroads of the A32 and A272 at 5-10 am last Thursday and found a Daf lorry that had come to rest against the cashpoint machine on the garage forecourt.

A Mercedes van had hit the verge beside the service station, leaving the male driver with serious leg injuries.

He was taken to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester, with the driver of the lorry, who was less seriously injured.

The two vehicles were travelling south and police say the lorry was turning right on to the A272 when the collision occurred. The van was travelling behind the lorry.

Meon Hut Service Station assistant manager Dave Quinton said: "The lorry smashed its way through the traffic lights at the crossroads, completely demolished two of our pumps and smashed into our Calor gas stand, spilling gas bottles everywhere.

"It was very lucky that we were not open at the time because it could have been a very nasty accident.

"The pumps were turned off at the time so there was no electricity running through. If they had been switched on, the petrol would have been ignited and there would have been an explosion."

Pc Pete Haywood from Fareham traffic department said: "Had people been refuelling their vehicles at the time of the crash then this would have been a lot worse."

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the incident to contact Fareham traffic on 0845 0454545.
