RETIREMENT home builder McCarthy and Stone will this week publically air its proposals to redevelop the former Malt House (Minnesotas) site on Lower Turk Street to provide high-quality, assisted-living accommodation for private sale.

The public exhibition, at Alton Assembly Rooms on Thursday, February 11, from 3pm-7pm, will give residents the chance to ask questions and provide feedback to McCarthy and Stone.

Since 2009 the site has been subject to a number of development proposals, including an Aldi store, supported by affordable and retirement homes, but nothing has come to fruition.

McCarthy and Stone is now working up plans with Somerset Care (Your Life Management) to redevelop the site to provide the extra-care accommodation which is expected to take the form of 55 retirement living apartments.

The proposal for the vacant brownfield site will also include the retention of the pedestrian footpath running through the site.

Shane Paull, regional managing director of McCarthy and Stone, said: “The Lower Turk Street site is a perfect location for our assisted-living apartments. Now that we have taken ownership of the site we will be working hard to ensure we deliver an attractive scheme for Alton and bring this vacant site back into use.

“We want to hear from the community before we submit a planning application and will be displaying our plans at the exhibition on February 11. Our project team will be at the exhibition to answer questions and listen to feedback.”

Estate management, care and support are provided by McCarthy and Stone in their assisted-living developments through Your Life Management Services, which is registered with the Care Quality Commission.

This is a partnership with Somerset Care Group, a not-for-profit care provider.

The development would be overseen by a registered estate manager, with staff based on site, with support available around the clock, seven days per week.
