AN 88-year-old motorist from Liss had a miraculous escape when she was in collision with another car on Ramshill at Petersfield last Friday afternoon. The woman's Corsa flipped onto its side, slid across the road, mounted the pavement and came to rest sandwiched between the railings of Churcher's College and the school bus. It was also a miracle for school children. Churcher's College had closed early on Friday afternoon in preparation for the school's annual open day the following day. Most of the pupils had already left the college, but the bus was waiting for several who were coming out of the side entrance of the college. A police spokesman told The Herald the Corsa, which was travelling up Ramshill, was in collision with a Saab driven by a 61-year- old Sheet woman at the junction with Ramshill opposite the college. "It was very fortunate that the driver of the Corsa was not injured and no school children were involved," said the spokesman. The driver of the Saab also escaped without injury. An eyewitness told The Herald: "After the collision with the Saab, the car coming up Ramshill crossed the road, hit the kerb and somehow ran along the railings on its wheels. It ended up on its side between the parked bus and the railings. There were children by the side gate, but mercifully the car did not get that far." Churcher's College headmaster Simon Williams said: "I was most impressed with the way in which the emergency services dealt with the accident close to the school. No-one was injured by the incident and no pupils were endangered. Inevitably with the busy roads that we have nowadays, accidents will happen, but with due care and attention to the assessment of risks the consequences can be mitigated."
